Utility Arboriculture – Ground Based Operator

Who is this for?

This course is for those who will be tackling vegetation and tree works from the ground only (i.e. non climbing, ground based operatives), using both hand pruning tools and chainsaws.

*You must be over 18 to attend this course, due to the constraints of the awarding body.

2 days Training with an additional 1 day City & Guilds NPTC Assessment

Venue:

This is normally completed at our site locally to Builth Wells.
If you have enough people for a full course, we are able to run this course on your site (subject to a pre-course visit).

Pre-requisites:

UA Basic Electrical Knowledge | Chainsaw Maintenance & Crosscutting | Felling Small Trees up to 380mm

Qualification:    

City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate of Competence in Utility Arboriculture Tree Species Recognition, Growth Characteristics and Associated Hazards
City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate of Competence in Utility Arboriculture Ground-based Pruning
City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate of Competence in Utility Arboriculture Assisted Tree Felling

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Risk assessment, hazards, risks, controls, emergency planning and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Risk Zones recap – Proximity zones, vicinity zones, live zones
  • Identify common species of tree and fungus
  • Know the associated growth rates and the typical timber characteristics of differing species
  • Understand work methods for all tree categories
  • Basic hazard recognition – identify dangerous trees through understanding pests, diseases and the bio mechanics of trees, and how they function as living organisms
  • Maintain & assemble insulated tools
  • Use insulated tools to prune trees in proximity to overhead power lines
  • Fell trees adjacent to overhead power lines
  • Clean & tidy site to specification
  • To be able to work safely
